TSI Global Conference: Madrid 2017

9th annual global conference held this month in Madrid

Jamie Morris, TSI Communications Manager

June, 2017

TMC owners and senior management from across the partnership convened in the Spanish capital this June for TSI’s 9th annual global conference.

Hosted by IAG7 Viajes (TSI Spain), this year’s gala event combined sessions on strategy with expert industry opinion and spectacular events, all under the theme “One Team, One Goal”. Where 2016’s conference focused on investments in systems and technology, Madrid 2017 celebrated the year’s focus on TSI’s world class personnel.

Madrid and the Torre

Madrid comes alive in the summer, crackling with an anticipatory atmosphere that builds in the day’s heat. As night falls people fill the streets; eating, drinking and enjoying the city. It is this famed atmosphere that makes Madrid unique. Barcelona may have the beach but the capital has an intangible allure that is celebrated by natives and visitors alike.

The venue for this year’s global conference reflected the city’s cultural flair and colour. The Barceló Torre de Madrid is a newly renovated property that occupies the first 13 floors of one of Spain’s most iconic modern buildings. A short walk from the Royal Palace, the Torre overlooks the famed Plaza de España and is flanked by Art Deco architecture including the Edificio España.

Sessions and Speakers

In keeping with the event’s theme, the internal sessions over the two days focused on team building and collective goal identification.

TSI partners also came together to review the successful Regional Teams Initiative and to discuss TSI’s layered Business Development strategy. Paul Spencer, Head of International Sales, on the subject of the new regional focus stated that “The regional teams are in part a response to client demand but also reflect a recognition of TSI’s strengths, which lie in the fantastic local service of our agencies. Creating cohesive regional sales and operational teams, to complement the global, increases the return on investment for our partners and the level of service provided to clients.”

Leading industry consultants, Jo-Anne Lloyd of Nina & Pinta and Aman Kaushik of Fulcrum-Push, provided learning opportunities for delegates; Jo on procurement trends in the industry and Aman on differentiation in a competitive marketplace. The focus on differentiation in Aman’s session and his subsequent workshop – which drew on the academic study Blue Ocean Strategy – excited discussion among delegates. With TSI partners consulted as part of strategic decision taking, attending TSI Board members were following the discussion closely!

Alongside learning and strategy, technology experts Amadeus, ITS & Mystifly provided expert insight into the industry’s future, which will undoubtedly be defined by communications and user experience (UX).

Ludo Verheggen of Amadeus spoke on the impact of millennial expectations on tech product development within the industry, predicting that delegates could expect to see more weird and wonderful forms of AI in the near future, at least from Amadeus. TSI USA’s Rick Kumpf then showed the Trip Easy platform, developed by sister company ITS, which he has positioned as a slick competitor to Concur Travel and Egencia.

Spectacular Events

As is the case each year, Madrid 2017 blended the serious stuff with a healthy dose of fun.

A private tour of the magnificent Palacio De Santoña and dinner in one of its grand halls opened the conference in style. Kind words of welcome from sponsors VisitMadrid, were followed by typical Spanish cuisine and an evening of networking between international colleagues. The following day excited delegates – this one especially – were treated to an access all areas tour of the Santiago Bernabeu, including a stroll on the hallowed turf. After pictures from Real Madrid’s official photographer (top) guests and sponsors sat down for the customary gala dinner overlooking the famous pitch at the stadium’s renowned Puerta 57 restaurant.

Our thanks to IAG7 CEO Fina Muñoz’s team and their luxury DMC operation MADRIDLUXE who secured privileged access to Real Madrid and the Palacio. Thanks too to TSI Spain’s Carlos Cuadrado and Federico Bueno, to all our sponsors and to attending delegates for making Madrid 2017 a success. Gracias a todos!
